CNN —A Polish pilot proposed to his flight attendant girlfriend during a flight from Warsaw to Krakow, and she said yes. “On today’s flight there is a very special person and I hope that she doesn’t expect anything,” he said. The soon-to-be Mrs Hanc, Paula, can then be seen running down the aisle of the plane to hug her future husband. “I don’t know if this is the right hand for this,” she said as he slipped the ring onto her finger in front of delighted passengers. It all started when Zahn was a flight attendant and Duncan was a pilot on a Pan American World Airways flight from Rome to Tehran in 1970 and lasted until Duncan’s death in 2021 at the age of 86.

But it wasn't until the team reviewed sonar data in December that they saw the fuzzy yellow outline of what resembles a plane. “In the end, we came out with an image of a target that we believe very strongly is Amelia’s aircraft," Romeo told The Associated Press. In soccer, the Women’s World Cup shattered several attendance and viewership records, but Spain’s win was overshadowed by a sexism storm that attracted global headlines. Manchester City won their first-ever Champions League trophy en route to the treble and Napoli lifted their first Serie A title in 33 years. Novak Djokovic’s quest to establish himself as the greatest-ever men’s tennis player was the highlight of the tennis season. PANAMA CITY (AP) — Panama’s Supreme Court ruled unanimously Tuesday that a 20-year concession for a Canadian copper mine that has been the focus of widespread environmental protests was unconstitutional. In March, Panama’s legislature reached an agreement with First Quantum allowing Minera Panama to continue operating the huge copper mine for at least 20 more years. The dispute over the mine led to some of Panama's most widespread protests in recent years, including a blockade of the mine’s power plant. A court decision that declared the contract unconstitutional was the last opportunity for opponents to get it thrown out. The Canadian government said it respected Tuesday's ruling and was following the contract negotiation closely.

The groups said in a press release that “measles continues to pose a relentlessly increasing threat to children.”Estimated measles cases increased 18% last year while deaths increased 43%, according to the report. About 9 million cases of measles and 136,000 deaths – mostly among children – were reported globally in 2022. “Measles cases anywhere pose a risk to all countries and communities where people are under-vaccinated. Low-income countries reported the lowest vaccination rates and showed no signs of recovery from the vaccination coverage decline during the pandemic. “The lack of recovery in measles vaccine coverage in low-income countries following the pandemic is an alarm bell for action.

QUILLOTA, Chile, Nov 3 (Reuters) - The Pan American Games show jumping competition ended in chaos on Friday, with Canada arguing a judging error had denied Amy Millar a place on the podium, triggering protests and appeals. Video showed that the barrier did drop but the Canadian protest argued it did so after Millar had crossed the finish line and completed her round. The U.S. later filed a counter appeal and could be seen engaged in an animated conversation with the Canadian team outside of the judges' meeting. "We just went all together, including the Canadian team, to watch the video, the video clearly shows she touched the fence," Ward, a five-time Olympian and double gold medallist told Reuters. Ward had no problem with Canada filing a protest but was happy officials made the decision they did.

Chile chasing Pan Am Games soccer golden double

SANTIAGO, Nov 1 (Reuters) - It was a deja vu double celebration for Chile at the Pan American Games on Wednesday as Martina Weil powered to women's 400 metre gold and the men's soccer team took a 1-0 win from the United States. The gold on back-to-back nights at the Estadio Nacional, where the 1962 World Cup final was played, were joyous achievements but it is a double opportunity at soccer gold that really has Chilean hearts pounding. The Chilean men have never won Pan Am Games gold and only once before, in 1987, appeared in the final losing to Brazil while the women have never before got to the semi-finals. Andrea Vargas gave Costa Rica their first gold of the Games successfully defending her 2019 Pan Am title in the 100m hurdles while Brazil's Eduardo Rodrigues won the men's. Led by double Olympic champion McLain Ward the U.S. won the equestrian team jumping gold ahead of Canada and Brazil.

SANTIAGO, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Chileans celebrated one of their biggest nights of the Pan American Games on Tuesday with Santiago Adolfo Ford claiming decathlon gold and the women's soccer team winning a 2-1 thriller over the U.S. to reach the final. The judo competition closed with Cuba beating Brazil to win the mixed team title and the great Idalys Ortiz adding another gold to her glittering resume. It was the perfect Pan Am Games goodbye for the 34-year-old four-times Olympic medallist, who has announced she will retire after next year's Paris Summer Games. Fencing was an all-American battle on Tuesday with Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Nick Itkin and Magda Skarbonkiewicz taking gold. Esports joins Pan Am Games, but medals won't count

But any medals won will not be added to their country's official total as they were at the recent Asian Games where esports had full medal status and was one of the most popular events drawing huge enthusiastic crowds. Like the Asian Games the Pan Am competition will be closely watched by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as Esports makes a push for a spot on the Olympic programme. While esports is making its Pan Am Games debut, gamers have been part of many other multi-sport competitions, including the Commonwealth and the European Games. One reason esports medals are not being counted at the Pan Am Games is that gamers are not subject to doping controls like every other athlete in Santiago. Authorities in Hangzhou ploughed $627 million into building a new esports venue while the Pan Am Games competition will be staged in a tent in a grassy corner of the Games fan zone.

While there has been a lack of quality and depth across many of the sports in Santiago, it was never more glaring than at the first day of athletics. The Pan American region has for decades produced some of the world's greatest sprinters, including Usain Bolt. Brazil's Izabela Rodrigues claimed the first gold of the athletics competition winning the women's discus while the women's long jump title went to Colombia's Natalia Linares. Chile's Lucas Nervi delighted a small but supportive opening day home crowd, taking top spot on the podium in the men's discus. CNN —It appeared that Kimberly García of Team Peru had absolutely smashed a world record in the 20km racewalk event at the 2023 Pan American games – until it was revealed that the course had been measured incorrectly. Andy Lyons/Getty ImagesThe corporation acknowledged that it hired Mr. Ithurralde, but only after he was appointed for duty by the APA. The final classification of the results still stands, meaning that García and her fellow competitors are permitted to keep their medals. Ranking points used for qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics are handed out based on race times and finishing position – which the athletes who participated in Sunday’s race will now not receive. “I have never seen anything like that before,” Canada’s Evan Dunfee, who competed in the men’s race, told Reuters.

After hitting the pause button the United States gold medal machine was back in gear on Sunday adding seven to their total. The U.S. also won three of the six gold on offer at the canoe slalom while the other three went to Brazil.
